What to Buy and Where
Below you can find a number of suppliers of film equipment and supplies. Repair facilities which I have come across are listed under Repair Shops. I've also listed a number
of filmclubs and reference books. A number of them in dutch, but you can not have it all...
From personal experience I can tell you that the ones I have contacted till now have proven to be very helpful and quick in delivering
the goods.
Check this supplier for new and used russian movie equipment. If you are using Krasnogorsk equipment,
this Krasnogorsk-3 site may be helpful.
I realise that the list is far from complete. So, if you are an unlisted supplier or if you have any
comment, please feel free to drop me an e-mail holding all the relevant information and I will update the site accordingly:

- Mr. Draser speaks english. ANDEC is a well known and established processing lab in Berlin. What I have seen
from them until now is good. Fast turn-around times of one week with no extra charge and capable of
doing all kinds of processing incl. push/pull processing. Ask them for their price list.
Kahl Media Art Film
- Sells and processes various filmformats including Double8. Also offers equipment like new
camera's and development tanks including the required chemicals.
There are mixed feelings on their processing quality. My experiences are not that good, others claim
good results on developed rolls.

- Mr. Phill Sheard informs me that his company sells cameras, projectors, lenses, films and offers repair services. They also offer a sound striping service.
MARTIN W. BAUMGARTEN
- ---> Your Source for Super 8mm & Regular 8mm Film Services <--- as he likes to put it himself. He
is an invaluable source of information and posts regularly on the Super8 Newsgroup. Also sells a lot of
different items. My questions on details were answered by him well and promptly.
Bavaria Production Services
- Expanding their business quickly, Bavaria Production Services took over the activities from
RITTER FILM+VIDEOTECHNIK GmbH. Most important, they do the Beaulieu service and representation in Germany and other countries.
In Europe a well known production studio for the "big" work, Bavaria Production Services
decided a year ago to create a small gauge services company for Super8 and 16mm productions. They are launching a
Super8 colour negative service "Cine8 High Quality System". Drop them a note and ask for their catalogue.
It's worth it.
Olexandr Kalynychenko
- Mr. Kalynychenko sells Russian movie equipment and materials from the Ukraine. He is also able
to deliver self-development gear like the LOMO tanks. He now has 16mm SVEMA material again. He hopes that he can
get Super8/Normal8 B/W reversal film from SVEMA again.
I have shot one roll of SVEMA film myself.
The cassette was inside a brand new, 20 year old, LOMO 214 Super8 camera and I gave it a try. Coming back from
the Berlin ANDEC lab I had a beautiful B/W toned film in my hand. A little bit grainy though.
Would love to get more of these SVEMA cassettes. For more detailed information visit my page on Russian cine equipment.
KINOTECHNIK RINSER
- Drop them a note and get an impressive catalogue with things they have for 8, 16 and 35mm filmmaking.
My experiences with them are good.
Film Stock Site by John Schwind
- John Schwind offers a range of filmstock including Double8 and the new 16mm Czech FOMAPAN R200
black and white reversal film. His prices are fine and delivery from the USA is prompt. His CINE-X
ASA 50 B/W Double8 film is recommended. Good contrast, good tone values and fine grain.
The Widescreen Centre
- Check their site for a complete overview. They do have a lot, although the prices are
high.

Simply Cine's Home Page
- News from the cutting room floor: It was a sad day when Kodak decided to kill off
striped film stock. However we at Simply Cine have a rather ambitious plan, because we are
thinking of putting S8 sound back into production within 3 years, this means that by
2003 S8 sound should be available again. Mail to Simply Cine
if you have any question.

- If you use UHER recording equipment for (sync) sound recording, this is the place to be
for getting very good service on these UHER gems. I've found a 35 year old UHER 4000 on a
flea market with a completely worn out magn. head. They had the original spare part at a very moderate price.
My workhorse 4400 Report Monitor was serviced by them well. Recommended.

- This is one of the very few magazines dedicated to 8 and 16mm filming. It's bi-monthly, exists for
I think 5 decades and is a wonderful source of information. Subscription is around Euro 70,- per year.
You have to read german though.
Smalfilm Hobbyboek
Jan van Weeszenberg
1980, Focus/Elsevier Publishers
ISBN 90 10 01163 1
- This is a fine dutch book for the serious amateur moviemaker who wants to know the basic and advanced
issues of the Art of Filmmaking. Well explained and using lots of photos, the author walks the reader
through composition, scenario, action line and continuity to name a few. Recommended.
Independent Filmmaking
Lenny Lipton
Published by Studio Vista, Cassell Ltd., London
ISBN 0 289 70420.0 (paperback)
ISBN 0 289 70421.9 (hardcover)
- If you are new to filming like I was not long ago, this is THE reference book. Well written I think
it covers all the issues you want to know about the Technology of making movies. It does not cover
the Art of making films that well. A lot of other books are published on that topic. The 16mm worker
is predominant, although Super8 and Double8 are covered.
The Super8 Book
Lenny Lipton
Published by Fireside Book, Simon and Schuster, New York
ISBN 0-671-22082-9
- Lipton must have thought that he can repeat the relevance of "Independent Filmmaking" and I think
he did, but now purely for Super8 productions. Again it covers all subjects you want and in an easy
readable style. Recommended, but hard to get. I found my copy in a second hand bookshop in Santa Monica, CA.
Both books are long out of print, but try Amazon.com and place a search order there.
Cinema Super8 & Video Legere
Michel Karlof
1980, Edition Denoel
Collection Connaissance & Technique
No ISBN Number
- If you can read french or at least get the drift, this is a magnificent book on Super8
filmmaking. It covers both Techniques as wel as Art. Orientation towards french equipment.
Moderne SchmalFilm Praxis
Uwe Ney
ISBN 3 8068 4034 1
Falken Verlag
- A thorough german book covering Art and Techniques with a taste for the german products
in the Super8 realm.
